Failure Friday: The Stories We Hide

Everybody talks about success.

The promotion.
The title.
The big win.
The perfect LinkedIn announcement.

But almost nobody talks about the moments underneath it all — the moments that felt like failure.

The panic attack before the presentation.
The demotion nobody knew you asked for.
The layoff that shattered your confidence.
The moment you realized the career you worked years to build no longer felt like your own.

Yet, those are often the moments that shape us the most and get us closer to our successes.

That’s why I’m starting something called Failure Friday.

Every Friday, I’ll anonymously share real stories from people navigating career struggles, identity shifts, burnout, rejection, fear, setbacks, uncertainty, and the messy reality behind success.

No names.
No identifying details.
Just honest stories that remind us we are far less alone than we think.

Because behind every success story, there’s usually a chapter that felt like failure.

Some examples of the kinds of stories I’m talking about:

  • “I had the executive title, the beautiful house, and the career people envied — and I felt completely miserable.”

  • “I begged to be demoted because the pressure of leadership felt unbearable.”

  • “I got fired and told nobody for months because I was so ashamed.”

  • “I built my entire identity around work and didn’t know who I was without it.”

As I always say, We’re All F’ing Up - so please share your story by contributing anonymously.

We need more honest conversations about what success actually looks and feels like — especially the parts people usually hide. That’s exactly why I created The F’ing Up Podcast.

Season 4 launches Wednesday, May 20, featuring candid conversations with successful people about layoffs, fear, identity shifts, burnout, career pivots, rejection, self-doubt, and the moments they thought they were failing.

Hearing that truth out loud helps all of us breathe a little easier.

If you’re feeling stuck, lost, burned out, disconnected from your work, or unsure what’s next, I also offer one-on-one Success Mentoring focused on helping people navigate career and identity challenges with more clarity and confidence.
